Boy, do I have great news for you - I did a quick search to answer your question. Soooo...apparently, the word was first used in the 1500s relating the speckled fabric to heath. Heath, not the chocolate bar, is a boring old plant whose stem is dotted with purple and pink flowers, the colors often bleeding into each other.
